Evening Update 21 Aug

Canicule - The Cote d’Azur is once again under a Meteó France heatwave alert, however this time not as severe as early August. The weather service say todays hotter than usual temperatures, could lead to violent storms in the mountains this evening. The alert is in place until midnight tonight.

Champagne - Champagne's grape harvest has started about two weeks earlier than usual this week. Around 120,000 seasonal workers have got to work in several villages of the Cote des Bar area. They say the ideal weather conditions, during the spring and summer this year, promise an excellent 2018 vintage.

Fireworks - The winner of this summer’s International Fireworks Competitions in Monaco have been announced, with Portugal, who performed on August 4th, taking the overall prize. They were narrowly beaten in the public vote where it was Bulgaria, who were the last of the teams to light up the skies over Monaco on August 11th, that stole the hearts of the public vote.


The dollar is trading lower today after President Trump said he's disappointed with the Federal Reserve's intention to keep hiking interest rates. However, a weaker dollar is one of President Trumps goals, believing that it makes US exports more attractive on a global stage, while tries to lower the national trade deficit.

A multi-millionaire catering boss from the UK has left £41 million to the charity Oxfam, after dying alongside his family in a plane crash. Richard Cousins had specified in his will, that the money should go to the charity, if he sons were to pre-decease him.


Football - After months of speculation Mario Ballotelli has announced that he has ‘decided’ to stay with OGC Nice for another season. The player had been linked with a potential move to Olympic Marseille but the club opted to sign French player Dem.bele from Celtic instead.

Manchester United have given their full backing to manager Jose Mourinho, after rumours he may be replaced by France’s Zine.dine Zidane. Mourinho is the favourite to be the next Premier League boss to leave his job, after a poor showing the in transfer season and a 3-2 defeat at the weekend to Brighton.

Basketball - Monaco have just signed the second highest scorer from last season’s Champions League, Jarrod Jones from Turkish team Pinar Karsi.yaka. Jones has been described as a complete and talented player, with a solid shoot, who can play one-on-one under the circle. Meanwhile, the home of the Rocca Boys in Monaco is ready to be shown-off, after a complete refurbishment during the summer. It will be seen on the resumption of the Jeep Elite Basketball Championship, with Monaco playing Lyon on September 22.

Formula 1 - French driver Pierre Gasly, says he was wearing nothing but his ‘underwear and a smile’, when he got the phone call saying he would be driving for Red Bull next year. He has been lined up to replace departing Daniel Ricciardo. He said after the call, he ran around the house shouting at his mates, and they all jumped in the pool straight away!
