Motorway - Half a dozen people have been injured in major road accidents so far today. At lunchtime, an articulated lorry hit a car on the A8 near St-Laurent-du-Var creating tailbacks of up to 15km. This was just after a three car pileup this morning near Antibes. The Voi Mathis in Nice was closed for a period this afternoon after a collision blocked the eastbound carriageway near Mangan.
Accident - A young man is being treated after dangerously diving eight metres into Lac ‘Sainte Croix’ near Draguignan. It’s the second incident this week alone where young men diving from dangerous heights needed rescuing.
Music - The band Massive Attack paid a moving tribute to the victims of the July 14th attacks at their Jazz Festival performance last night in Nice. The band, who had been due to headline the festival in 2016, displayed the names of all 86 dead on giant screens on stage. Meanwhile, singer Rag’n’Bone Man has been forced to cancel his performance this Saturday due to health problems. He apologized to fans, as the Festival’s organisers wished him a speedy recovery, adding that they are still to confirm a replacement.
Turtle - A turtle released into the sea at Monaco last month has already travelled 500km to Spain and is continuing to head south. The turtle is being tracked as an experiment, by the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco.
Donald Trump says he is ready to intensify his trade war with China by slapping tariffs on all products imported from the country. His comments come after Washington listed an additional $200bn worth of tariffs.
Trump is also claiming today that multiple nations are manipulating their currencies to the detriment of the dollar. He accused China and the EU of manipulation, by keeping interest rates lower, while the US is raising rates, as the dollars gets stronger.
Football - Mystery still surrounds the possibility of Mario Balotelli moving from Nice to Olympic Marseilles. The player was not seen for two weeks, while his lawyer attended meetings in Marseilles. Then this week, the Italian mysteriously re-appeared and began training again with Nice. Now, today, OM’s Director of Football has said the Balotelli case is ‘complicated’ and not a normal football situation. It’s believed Nice are holding out for €10 million to transfer the striker.
Formula 1 - Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo beat Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes to fastest time by just 0.004 seconds in first practice for the German Grand Prix but will start from the back of the grid because of engine penalties. Team-mate Max Verstappen made it a positive session with third, Sebastian Vettel was fourth with Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas fifth.
Golf - Rory McIlroy kept himself firmly in contention at the halfway stage of the Open despite having to abandon his aggressive approach in the second round. McIlroy used his driver as often as he could in his opening 69 at Carnoustie but wet conditions this morning forced him to adopt more conservative tactics.
