It’s been revealed that a serious aircraft safety incident occurred at Nice Airport last week. On 6th November an aircraft accidentally began its take-off procedure on the service road adjacent to the runway instead of on the runway itself. The aircraft reportedly reached speeds of 170 km per hour and had travelled almost a kilometer on the service road before air traffic controllers informed the crew of their error and they brought the aircraft to a halt. The incident, involving a TAP Portugal flight to Lisbon, was revealed on the website of the French accident investigation bureau, the BEA. The aircraft later took off safely on the runway.
The Promenade du Paillon in the centre of Nice was evacuated for about an hour this afternoon because of a suspect package which was found in a waste bin. Traffic was disrupted but has now returned to normal after the authorities declared that the package was safe.
A large fire broke out last night in an apartment building on the boulevard Gambetta in Nice. Reports say that almost 30 firefighters were present and twenty people were evacuated. Only one person was slightly injured but an apartment on the top floor of the building and a large area of attic space were destroyed by the fire.
There has been severe disruption of public transport in Marseille today because of industrial action. Reports say that more than 50 per cent of bus services were cancelled and only one in two metro lines were running this morning. Unions called the industrial action because of the dismissal of a driver following a collision.
A flock of 350 sheep have been attacked by wolves in the rural commune of Valderoure near Grasse. Thirty animals were killed by wolves on just one night despite the sheep being protected by electric fences, a shepherd and three guard dogs. Attacks were also reported on other nights recently.
Tesla has unveiled an electric truck. The Tesla Semi, which will go into production in 2019, has a range of 500 miles on a single charge. The company’s Chief executive Elon Musk also unexpectedly revealed a new sportscar which will be available in 2020.
Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover has announced today that it has tested its first driverless car on a public road. The test is taking place in Coventry.
CRICKET…Wicketkeeper Tim Paine has been included in Australia’s side for the first Ashes Test against England. Paine was last included in a test side back in 2010. Uncapped Cameron Bancroft is in the squad, as is Shaun Marsh, who will bat at number six. The first Test begins at the Gabba next Thursday.
TENNIS… David Goffin has beaten Austrian fourth seed Dominic Thiem in London in the ATP Finals tournament. Goffin won 6-4 6-1 to set up a semi-final match against Roger Federer on Saturday. Grigor Dimitrov will face Jack Sock in the other semi-final
FOOTBALL… Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said that he’s including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba in his squad for Saturday's game against Newcastle. Both players have been out because of injury recently.
MOTORSPORTS …. A Ferrari driven by Michael Schumacher in the Monaco Grand Prix has been sold at auction for 7.5 million dollars. The car, which was auctioned in New York, was driven by Michael in his last victory in Monaco in 2001.
