Evening Update 16 Aug 2017

Girls - Three young men from Paris have been arrested for prostituting their girlfriends on the Riviera to pay for their holiday here. The girls, one of whom is just 16 years of age, have been made work since the beginning of the summer. The men, known to police for violence and drug trafficking, remain in custody, while police conduct their investigations.

Crash - A second person has died after a horrific traffic accident at the weekend, which has already killed a 15 year-old boy. Three people were involved, when the car they were driving in, went out of control and hit a tree. The teenage boy died on the scene, and today a 21 year-old man lost his battle for life, leaving one sole 19 year-old survivor. All three are from the village of Touet-sur-Var.

Robbery - Police are investigating a robbery at the well known La Tarte Tropezienne patisserie in Mougins. Two men wearing helmets, held up two employees and the owner, as they were closing on Monday. It’s believed they got away with several thousand euro.

Stabbing - The August 15th holiday ended badly night in Nice, when a fight between two gangs, led to a 28 year-old man being stabbed in the Old Town just behind the Quai des Etats-Unis. The man, who received multiple stab-wounds, including one in the back, is recovering in Louis Pasteur hospital.


Unemployment in the UK is at it’s lowest since 1975 after new figures show unemployment fell by 57,000 in the three months to June. The jobless rate is now 4.4%. Average weekly earnings increased by 2.1%, however with inflation standing at 2.6%, real earnings still fell.

Taxi firm Uber have been ordered to introduce tougher measures to protect the privacy of its drivers and their customers. The charges relate to software known as ‘God View’, which allows the company to monitor real-time locations of customers and drivers.


Football - Tonights big game is the Champions League clash between OGC Nice and Naples. It’s expected to be an uphill battle for Nice, as they play in front of 51,000 local fans in Italy, without their star player Balotelli or new signing Wesley Sneijder.

In the UK Stoke have signed ex-Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez on a season-long loan from Paris St-Germain. Rodriguez joined PSG last August for £21m on a five-year deal, but scored just twice in 14 appearances, before he was loaned to Spanish club Las Palmas in January for the rest of the season.

Tennis - Japan's Kei Nishikori is out for the rest of the season after tearing a tendon in his right wrist. The world number nine joins 12-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka in the list of missing players for the US Open, which starts on 28 August.
