Beach - The beaches at St-Laurent-du-Var are open again today, after four days of closure, due to contaminants washed down by floodwaters in the River Var. The announcement was made this after noon by Mayor Joseph Segura.
Film - It’s been announced the 72nd Cannes Film Festival will take place between the 14th and the 25th of May next year. It means, that unlike this year, the 2019 Cannes Film Festival will coincide with the Formula 1 race in Monaco.
Lloris - Normal life has resumed on the Cours Salaya in Nice today, after 30 people were hurt by a stampede which began when post-football match firecrackers were mistaken for something more sinister.
Meanwhile French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who is from Nice, has lit up the city and the internet, after his stunning performance last night. Today there are pictures online of Lloris’s face imposed on Superman, one of Donald Trump requesting a meeting with Lloris to discuss his wall, and one Tweeter wishing Lloris was with Napoleon at Waterloo.
China said it is shocked after the US announced more plans for fresh tariffs, escalating a trade war between the two countries. The US listed $200bn worth of additional products, it intends to place tariffs on, as soon as September. The move comes just days after the two countries imposed tit-for-tat tariffs of $34bn on each other's goods. Beijing described Washington's latest threat as totally unacceptable.
It’s expected that Brexit will create some 3,500 direct jobs in finance and banking around Paris as leading players in the sector move their operations out of London. The US asset management giant Blackrock and the bank Citigroup are among the companies planning to move activities to Paris. On top of the estimated 3,500 jobs, the transfers could generate an additional 20,000 indirect jobs in the capital.
World Cup - Gareth Southgate has warned that England's semi-final against Croatia tonight will be the teams toughest test at the World Cup so far. He said they'll be the best team England have played in terms of what they're capable of doing with the ball. However, for England as a team, it's another chance to create a small piece of history. If they do win, it will put them in an epic World Cup Final against France this coming Sunday. Tonight’s semi-final is on TF1 television and kicks off at 8pm French time.
Meanwhile Belgiums manager and goalkeeper have both been bad-mouthing the French team which beat them last night saying Didier Deschamps's defensive style of play was a shame for football. However, France’s World Cup super-star Kylian Mbappé, had one response to the jibes saying, if I offended them, I apologize. But me, I'm in the final!
