Death - Despite new speed limits, an 18 year old girl has died in a head on collision on the Route de Muy in the Var yesterday.  The accident happened as one of the two vehicles was overtaking. Drivers are urged to slow down and remember the new speed limit on two-way roads, ones without a central reservation or barrier, has been lowered from 90km/hr to 80km/hr.

Property - A new study shows Nice is the slowest city in France to sell property, taking up to 90 days from first advertising for sale, to handing over the keys. In Paris or Lyon the average is about half that at 41 days.

Weather - With extreme temperatures of up to 35d forecast for mid-July, the government has issued some safety advice, including staying out of the midday sun, and showering regularly as well as drinking lots of water. They said this because when temperatures go over 32C, a fan does not act against the oppressive heat but actually accelerates dehydration.

Tesco says it is planning a "strategic alliance" with French retail giant Carrefour, as the two try to use their joint buying power to cut costs and offer lower prices to customers. The two will negotiate together when dealing with global suppliers, and the tie-up will also mean sharing their own-brand products. Carrefour operates over 12,000 stores in more than 30 countries, employing about 375,000 people worldwide. Last year, they had sales of €88bn.

Tennis - US Open champion Sloane Stephens has became the biggest casualty on the opening day of Wimbledon as she lost to world number 55 Donna Vekic. The fourth-seeded American, who was beaten by Simona Halep in last month's French Open final, lost 6-1 6-3.

Roger Federer began his quest for a record-extending ninth Wimbledon men's singles title with a routine win over Serbia's Dusan Lajovic. Federer won 6-1 6-3 6-4 in just under an hour and a half.

Two of France’s finest players are due on No.2 court later today when Gaël Monfils takes on Richard Gasquet.

Football - Today in the World Cup, it’s Brazil against Mexico this afternoon and tonight Belgium take on Japan. Meanwhile, the Spanish media have pulled no punches in their assessment of the country’s last-16 exit against Russia, in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, yesterday. The headlines included the words Stupid, Negligent and End of an Era.

Diving - Alice Modolo, a dentist from Nice, has become the French champion after diving a record breaking 76 metres without air at Villfranche this weekend. The dive took 2 minutes and 15 seconds and has set a new national record.
