Evening News Update Monday 10 September

The mayor of La Seyne sur Mer has put emergency measures in place following the fatal shooting of a 20 year old man and a 14 year old boy in the early hours of this morning. The measure includes a temporary curfew for minors, which applies immediately. Marc Vuillemot revealed that he had asked the prefecture to request mobile security forces from the Interior Ministry.  He also said that it was planned to complete the installation of security cameras in certain zones within the next few days.

A forty year old man was shot dead in Marseille last night. Several shootings have taken place in the city over the week-end. On Friday another man was shot dead and early on Sunday morning two people were seriously injured after a shooting outside a nightclub.

The Saint-Exupéry airport in Lyon was closed this afternoon after a man crashed his car through a perimeter fence and drove into a terminal and then onto the runway.  The driver was followed by police and was arrested shortly afterwards. He had driven the wrong way down the A43 motorway and had crashed through a toll booth shortly before entering the airport.  At least 50 flights were cancelled and several others were diverted to other airports, including Geneva, Marseille and Nice. Nobody was injured in the incident.

The former French Secretary of State Jean-Vincent Placé has been given a 3 month suspended prison sentence and fined 1,000 euros by a court in Paris today.  The former senator was appearing in court to answer charges following his arrest after an altercation in a bar in April this year.

The city of Nice is commemorating the 50th anniversary of a plane crash in which 95 people lost their lives. Families of the victims are still looking for answers after 95 people, including 89 passengers and 6 crew members, were killed when the flight from Ajaccio to Nice crashed in the sea off the Antibes on the 11th September 1968. An investigation carried out from November 1968 to April 1972 concluded that the cause was due to a fire on board. However in an article published by Paris Match 10 days after the crash reported that military exercises were being held in the area at the time of the crash, suggesting that the aircraft could have been hit by a missile during training.



In the UK, The Office for National Statistics has said the economy grew by 0.3% in July, and by 0.6% over the three months to July. Retail sales performed well, boosted by the warm weather and the World Cup.  However, industrial output contracted. The ONS also announced that the UK's trade deficit narrowed by £1.4bn to £3.6bn in the three months to July.

Luxury goods company Richemont has announced a 25% rise in sales to €5.6bn for the five months to the end of August. The company owns brands including Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels.  The company said that Hong Kong, Korea and Macau all generated double digit increases while China also showed good growth.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, has reportedly said he thinks a Brexit deal with the UK is “realistic” and “possible” within eight weeks. Speaking at a conference in Slovenia, he said both sides needed to reach an agreement by the start of November.



CRICKET… It’s day four out of five in the Test Match at the Oval and Alistair Cook has hit a century in his final test innings. It was his 33rd Test century since making his debut in 2006.  England are batting at the moment in their second innings.

MOTORSPORTS….Romano Fenati has apologised for what he called a "disgraceful gesture" after grabbing a rival's brake lever while travelling at 130mph during a Moto2 race yesterday.  He was banned for two races after the incident during the San Marino Moto2. Since then his contract with the Marinelli Snipers Team has been terminated.

FOOTBALL… Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has withdrawn from the England squad for Tuesday's friendly against Switzerland with a minor muscle strain. England manager Gareth Southgate had already brought in Leicester's Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray from the Under-21s team and has not called up a replacement for Alli.
